Ghella is proud to announce that the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension has been awarded the prestigious Canadian Project of the Year Award (Over $300M CAD) by the Tunnelling Association of Canada (TAC). This recognition celebrates engineering excellence, innovation, and outstanding expertise in underground construction.
The Canadian Project of the Year Award (Over $300M CAD) is presented annually by TAC to a team that has made a significant contribution to a Canadian project, demonstrating the highest level of engineering skill and a deep understanding of tunnelling and underground excavation techniques.
Eligible works are projects that completed boring or underground excavation in 2024, and the award is jointly presented to all major team members who contributed significantly to the project’s delivery.
As Canada’s national representative within the International Tunnelling Association (ITA), the Tunnelling Association of Canada promotes innovation, safety, and technical progress through conferences, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, connecting Canadian practitioners to a global network of experts.
This award reflects the quality of the work carried out and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary expertise on a project that is both technically complex and strategically important for the Greater Toronto Area’s growing transit network.
The project
The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a 9.2-kilometre extension of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit project. The extension will run from Mount Dennis Station to Renforth Drive. The system will have connections to several local and regional transit services, including Union Pearson Express and Kitchener GO train lines, GO bus routes, and local TTC and Mississauga MiWay bus services. Plans are also being explored to connect the extension to Toronto Pearson International Airport. The project considers forecasted population growth in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area population from 7 million to more than 10 million by 2041. By the same year, the extension will see close to 70,000 daily rides and bring 37,500 more people within walking distance to transit.
