Milestone Reached on Watercare’s Central Interceptor Project

We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in our work on Watercare’s Central Interceptor project in Auckland. Our Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, has successfully broken through the base of the 30-metre-deep shaft at the Western Springs site.

This breakthrough comes after tunnelling over 13 kilometres and installing more than 8,100 segment rings, showcasing the significant progress on this critical infrastructure project. The largest wastewater project in New Zealand, our super-sized tunnel will run for 16.2kms under Auckland city and the Manukau Harbour.

Initially planned as the final site on the tunnel alignment approved in 2019, the project has since expanded to include new sites in Grey Lynn and Point Erin, Herne Bay, continuing to make a positive impact by working towards reducing wastewater overflows across Auckland.

We are proud of this achievement and remain committed to advancing Auckland’s infrastructure with sustainable solutions.
