Ghella, in JV, to develop 27-km section between Caltanissetta Xirbi and Nuova Enna, part of TEN-T corridor

Rome, April 27, 2023

Ghella, in JV, has been awarded a contract worth a combined total of €1.2 billion to develop Lot 4A between the stations of Caltanissetta Xirbi and Nuova Enna as part of the development of a high-capacity railway along the Palermo-Catania axis in Sicily, Italy. Commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) of Gruppo FS Italiane and financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the contract involves the executive design and construction of 27 kilometres of the railway.

The new Palermo-Catania-Messina axis is a strategic project for Sicily and Italy, and it will be part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). It will reduce travel times between Palermo and Catania by 60 minutes to two hours.
Lot 4A, which will have a new rail line built next to the existing one, will include 20 kilometres of tunnels, of which 90% excavated by tunnel-boring machines. 3km kilometres of the line will be across viaducts. The work will be executed by Ghella(25%) and TunnelPro (Ghella Group) and Webuild (75% leader), with SELI Overseas (Webuild Group).
